Funny picturebooks

When I was around 25 I developed an interest in picturebooks. I would go to Border's and read picturebooks for hours. I grew very fond of those books as I realized there is something very refreshing about good picturebooks. Some of the books I've read at the time are memorable now for their imaginativeness, some for their human touch and some for their humor. In this post I'll tell you about the really funny ones.

The first book is Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day by Judith Viorst. It's about a day in Alexander's life which starts off with his teacher liking his friend's picture of a sailboat better than his picture of the invisible castle. From then on, things get only worse. You can't help feeling sorry with the poor Alexander and try to put your own problems into perspective. It's a great gift for friends who are going through a though day.

Animals Should Definitely Not Wear Clothing by Judi Barrett and Ron Barrett is another lovely book. It shows the disastrous things that would happen if animals had to wear clothes.

Now Everybody Really Hates Me by Jane Read Martin and Roz Chast is a hilarious book about a girl who was sent to her room after hitting her brother at his birthday and who then decides she will spend the rest of her life in there. The illustrations are great, too.

Other fun books are
I Will Never Not Ever Eat a Tomato by Lauren Child and Lynn Munsinger, Princess Penelope's Parrot by Helen Lester illustrated by Lynn Munsinger again, Martha Speaks by Susan Meddaugh, Amelia Bedelia by Peggy Parish and Fritz Siebel, and finally The Paper Bag Princess by Robert Munsch and Michael Martchenko, a classic.
